Australia is making headlines with a groundbreaking move: a social media ban for children under 16, starting next month. This bold initiative has sparked both excitement and concern, and it's something every parent and tech-savvy individual should be aware of.

This brings the total number of platforms targeted in the ban to a significant nine, including giants like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Threads.
Starting on December 10th, tech companies that fail to comply face hefty fines – up to A$50 million (that's about $32.5 million or £25.7 million). The government's aim is clear: to protect young Australians online. But how will it work?
The government's rationale is straightforward: these platforms are primarily designed for social interaction. But this raises a key question: what about the platforms that aren't included? Messaging services like Discord and WhatsApp, along with gaming platforms such as Lego Play and Roblox, are currently exempt. Also excluded are Google Classroom and YouTube Kids. "Delaying children's access to social media accounts gives them valuable time to learn and grow, free of the powerful, unseen forces of harmful and deceptive design features such as opaque algorithms and endless scroll," explains Australia's eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant. Federal Communications Minister Anika Wells emphasizes that the ban is about protecting children from the "chilling control" online platforms can exert. She stated, "We aren't chasing perfection, we are chasing a meaningful difference."
But here's where it gets controversial... The implementation of the ban is still unclear. Potential methods include using official ID documents, parental approval, and even facial recognition technology. However, critics are already raising red flags about data privacy and the accuracy of age verification methods. A recent report highlighted the risks and shortcomings of these proposed methods.
And this is the part most people miss... While polls show that most Australian adults support the ban, some mental health advocates worry it could isolate kids. Others fear it might push youngsters into even less regulated areas of the internet. Adding a layer of complexity, an Australian influencer family with millions of YouTube followers recently announced they're moving to the UK to avoid the ban, specifically so their 14-year-old daughter can continue creating online content. Initially, YouTube was exempt, but the government reversed its decision in July, citing it as the platform where children aged 10-15 saw the most harmful content. While teens under 16 can still view YouTube videos, they won't be allowed to have accounts, which are necessary for uploading content or interacting on the platform.
